IntelligenceHunt VIII Project

  The Finals of the 8th IntelligenceHunt project was held online January 26-27th, 2022. 

January 26th, the Case Companies presented the case assignments and Talent Teams presented their solutions. January 27th we heard about the strategies behind the case assignments by the Corporate Case Company Speakers and the day ended with the Award Ceremony.​

This time we had seven international, cross-faculty talent teams and seven case companies competing.

The Winner of the IntelligenceHunt8 Competition

  The winner of the project competition was Talent Team RAUMA´S DECARBONIZERS with AHMED HASSAN (EG), Team Leader, Aalto University, Finland, XIAOHAN GU(CN), Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, MARIIA KHRAPYTSKA (UA), Odessa I. I. Mechnikov National University, Ukraina, ANKITA NAYAK (IN), Aalto University, Finland and NSEOBONG UMOH (NG), Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden with the case assignment "Decarbonizing Shortsea Shipping" by Rauma Marine Constructions.

The award for the team Rauma´s Decarbonizers is six months tailored individual career mentoring programme, and 500 € /team member. They all will be chosen as Finalists for the next intelligence hunt, if they wish to join. They will also be speakers of the Intelligence Hunt 9 Finals at the Navigate2022 Maritime Trade Exhibition, Turku, June 1-2, 2022.

The First Runner-Up!

PAMELA NELIMARKKA M.Sc. (Leadership and Sustainability) has a long history working in the fast-moving consumer goods industry and she has over the years gained vast operational experience by working in various senior planning and sales operations roles. She had long experience in Fazer where she held the role of Head of Sales & Operations Planning and Logistics. She is now working at Reima, focusing on the European sales operations’ functions for all channels (Wholesale, Retail, E-commerce) including customer support, logistics, planning and business IT.

10.50 Case Finnpilot Pilotage - Carbon Neutral Finnpilot

KARI KOSONEN has a strong maritime background, all together 33 years in maritime business, including 9 years onboard different types of vessels (mainly deck officer), 13 years in Maritime Administration (Deputy Director) and 11 years in Finnpilot (Pilotage Director and CEO). Kosonen was appointed as the CEO in 2017. He is also the Member of the Executive Committee since 2010.

ROLAND FORSSELL has a long and wide experience in maritime. He is the Managing Director of the C & C Port Agency Finland since 2002. Prior to joining C & C Port Agency Finland he worked at Nurminen Maritime as a Manager of Agency Department and Port Agent at Saimaa Lines Ltd.

11.20 Case Port of Helsinki - One Gate System – Access Control & Day-to-Day Operations

VILLE HAAPASAARI M.Sc.(Forest Economy), has been the CEO of Port of Helsinki since April 2018.Prior to this appointment he has worked at Finavia as the SVP, and the Helsinki Airport Director 2012-2018. Previously he worked in various responsibilities at Finnlines. His main emphasis being on the head of business positions and sales management. 

11.30 Case Wärtsilä Voyage - JIT Arrivals for Ports’ to Reduce Co2 in Modern Shipping

DMITRY ROSTOPSHIN, Director, General Manager, Ship Traffic Safety & Port Operations Solutions in Wärtsilä VoyageDmitry Rostopshin has been working in Transas since 2000. He started his career from testing engineer in development department, worked several years as project installation engineer and get back to research and development as product manager.  He was involved in many vessel traffic service as well as coastal and offshore surveillance projects around the world. Currently he is General Manager of Ship Traffic Safety & Port Operations Solutions in Wärtsilä Voyage responsible for all VTS and coastal surveillance product lines. He is also VTS Instructor in Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping Training Center. Dmitry graduated Saint-Petersburg State University as astronomer and mathematician. He also studied in Blackpool and The Fylde Nautical College as VTS Operator.

MARCO PALMU is a true professional in the travel and tourism industry with 30 years’ experience. Marco has worked for tour operators, travel agencies and several ferry lines, including Superfast and Tallink Silja. He joined Finnlines in September 2021 after being appointed as Head of Passenger Services. Marco has always worked in an international environment and is eager to face new challenges, one of which will be promotion of  Finnlines’ coming Superstar ro-pax vessels. Marco is confident that the travel business will soon recover and seaway will be the best way to move from one place to another.

POUL WOODALL is the Mentor of the Rauma Marine Constructions case. Woodall has more than 40 years experience in the maritime world with a particular interest in climate and environmental issues. He now has his own consulting company, but he has worked for Denmark’s two largest shipping organisations, Maersk and DFD, for over 45 years combined. Educated as a Maersk management trainee, he has spent 17 years working abroad in Asia, Middle East and Europe. More recently he has been active on the shipping climate and environmental agenda working with, and for, a number of organisations like Danish Shipping, UK Chamber of Shipping and Interferry.

Dr ROLF NEISE is the Mentor of the REIMA Case. Currently Dr. Neise works as a freelance consultant at HPMLOG Project & Management Consultants GmbH supporting multinational companies to optimise their supply chain management and logistics structures and as a lecturer at the International School of Management (ISM). He has just written a book for a well-known international publisher on integrating container logistics into the shippers’ supply chain. It is the first book on the market looking at container logistics from a shipper’s perspective.

ESKO MUSTAMÄKI is the Mentor of the Wärtsilä case. Mustamäki has a long and wide experience in shipbuilding and maritime industry. He worked as a Managing Director for Arctech Helsinki Shipyard 4/2011 - 12/2018. Arctech Helsinki Shipyard was founded in 2010 specialized in building icebreakers and other Arctic offshore and special vessels. Today he is the Member of the Board of Directors of the Helsinki Shipyard. Prior to joining Arctech Helsinki Shipyard he was employed by Wärtsilä Marine in 1980 and after that he has been employed by F-G Shipping Inc., Finnlines Plc, Finstaship and SET-Group Ltd.

11.25 Case Company The Port of Helsinki

JANI LINDROOS, Logistics engineer (B.Eng.) started as a Development Manager of the Port of Helsinki Ltd cargo traffic unit in September 2020. Previously, Jani Lindroos worked as a consultant at Maya Consulting Oy. Before that he worked for the Borealis group in the petrochemical industry for a long time. At the port, Lindroos is in charge of the planning and advancing of cargo traffic unit development projects. His role also includes financial and operational planning for the unit.

FRANK KHO is the Mentor of the Port of Helsinki case. Kho is, an independent advisor active in the container logistic and terminal industry since 2018. He has more than 30 years’ experience in this industry across the globe. His career includes 20+ year in several senior management positions in Asia and Europe with PSA and HPH, 2 of the leading global terminal operators. Recently he has been appointed as the CEO of the new TIC 4.0 Association (Terminal Industry Committee 4.0), supported by FEPORT and PEMA, developing standards for the terminal industry.

LAURA KEINO works as a Financial Specialist at C&C Port Agency Finland. She has been working for the company for four years in addition to studies, first as a Financial Assistant and later on as a Financial Specialist. Laura is currently finalising her master´s thesis and thus graduating in December with a Master of Science degree in Economics and Business Administration from the Oulu University Business School.

MIKAEL SIMELIUS is the Mentor of the C & C Port Agency Finland case. He has over 30 years of extensive experience in branding, marketing and, sales, spanning from running businesses to leading global organisations. Currently, he focuses on helping and supporting start-ups, small and, medium-sized companies in functions like general management, marketing, branding, positioning and, sales, as well as board positions. Simelius works, mainly through his own company Light Vision Ltd. Prior to starting his own business, his working experience included Wärtsilä Oyj, Stora Enso Oyj, Satama Interactive Oyj and AGO Ab.

AKI MARJASVAARA, Master of Engineering (Industrial Management), Master Mariner is the Transport Director at Finnpilot Pilotage Ltd. He is also a Member of the Executive Committee since 2014. Before joining the Finnpilot in 2014 Marjasvaara worked at the Port of Loviisa as a Harbour Master 2008–2014 and at the Port of HaminaKotka Ltd as a Safety Inspector 2004–2005.

13.12 Mentor Markku Mylly

MARKKU MYLLY is the Mentor of the Finnpilot Pilotage case. Mylly has a long experience in the maritime sector since 1973. He was sailing in Finnish merchants ships until 1987, when he joined Finnish Maritime Administration. He worked in FMA until 2010 and he was the 10th and last Director General of FMA. In 2010 he moved to Finnish Port Association and worked there as a CEO until joined EMSA in 2012 September. He was the Executive Director of European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) in Lisbon, Portugal 2012-2018. Mr Mylly has collaborated a lot on the international level since he joined FMA and he was responsible for many EU Twinning projects during years 2002 – 2010 in Estonia, Croatia and Bulgaria.

HANNU LUMME is a consultant and expert in sales within the Russian and Eastern European markets. His special areas are maritime & land transports, intermodal logistics chains between Germany, other European countries, and Russia. Mr Lumme has worked since 1980 in the maritime and land transport sectors in management positions at Finnish State Railways, Railship, Finncarriers, later Finnlines.. Since 2002 he worked at Finnlines Group as Head of Marketing & Sales Russia, and Owner´s commercial representative in Russia for Russian & EAEU market area. He retired in 2021 from Finnlines.

JANI LINDROOS, Logistics engineer (B.Eng.) started as a Development Manager of the Port of Helsinki Ltd cargo traffic unit in September 2020. Previously, Jani Lindroos worked as a consultant at Maya Consulting Oy. Before that he worked for the Borealis group in the petrochemical industry for a long time. At the port, Lindroos is in charge of the planning and advancing of cargo traffic unit development projects. His role also includes financial and operational planning for the unit.

ULLA TAPANINEN, Associate Professor Maritime Transport, Adjunct Professor PhD, has over 25 years’ experience in logistics and maritime transport research and development work. She received her PhD  in 1997 in logistics modelling. She has worked for ten years as a  development manager and environmental manager in a large Finnish  roro-shipping company Finnlines Plc. Between 2006 – 2012 she worked as a professor of maritime logistics in the University of Turku specialising in maritime and port operations and their IT; and maritime safety. Thereafter she served as Senior Specialist and Head of Unit  for City of Helsinki in port and cross-border transport development projects.  She started as Associate Professor of Maritime Transport in Estonian Maritime Academy in Tallinn University of Technology in 2021, focusing on sustainable shipping.

XAVIER DE MEULDER is a Senior Site Manager – Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy A/S. He has over 25 years of extensive experience in marine and offshore operations worldwide. His careers spans a wide range of projects and operations in different maritime sectors such as heavy lift shipping, oil & gas as well as the renewable offshore energy sector. Presently Xavier De Meulder is assigned to the Asia-Pacific Region, for the construction and installation of wind turbines on offshore wind farms in Taiwan.

A Master Mariner by trade, De Meulder holds a diploma in Nautical Sciences as well an Executive Masters in Business Administration from the University of Turku.
